Battle of Athens, Tennessee
On August 1-2, 1946, some Americans, brutalized by their county government, used armed force as a last resort to overturn it. These Americans wanted honest open elections.

V-E Day
On this day in 1945, both Great Britain and the United States celebrate Victory in Europe Day. Cities in both nations, as well as formerly occupied cities in Western Europe, put out flags and banners, rejoicing in the defeat of the Nazi war machine.

Educational Freedom
Most of us went to school when we were younger, and we cannot imagine otherwise. However, it may be worth contemplating radical alternatives to the notion of school. The conflict between schooling and libertarian principles appears to me to have widened in the age of the Internet.

Harris-Perry elaborated, where she said she wants to “double down” on the comments. “I have no intention of apologizing for saying that our children, all of our children, are part of more than our households,”

Critics pan yet another MSNBC promo with Harris-Perry
MSNBC came under fire this week for a promotional video where host Melissa Harris-Perry explained that we need to “break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents” and recognize that “kids belong to whole communities.” Now, critics are again raising concern with yet another controversial promo for Harris-Perry’s show.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who’d served in Vietnam as an Army noncommissioned officer, today issued a statement commemorating Vietnam Veterans Day.

Catholic Universities offer support to Boston college on condom giveaway stance
“One of the teachings of our faith is that contraception is morally unacceptable,” Victor Nakas, a spokesman for Catholic University, told the paper. “Since condoms are a form of contraception, we do not permit their distribution on campus.”

Tiffany Thompson got her wish: Demetrius Murphy met the “Right Person” and he will not be playing the Knockout Game any more. Ever. A St. Louis homeowner shot Murphy dead late last week during a burglary. And a whole lot of people in St. Louis feel relieved, if not safer.
Murphy was a member of a group that is credited with making the Knockout Game a St. Louis tradition, then a national past time.

The suspect accused of shooting dead former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and another man stole a vehicle from the scene and told his sister "I traded my soul for a new truck," investigators said.
Eddie Ray Routh was being held on $3 million bond on a capital murder charge for the double-slaying on Saturday.

Panetta to propose Military pay cut after Obama raised federal officials pay
Outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta reportedly believes the military should receive a pay cut in order to respond to the budget cuts facing the Pentagon — a position that might strengthen the Republican push to reverse President Obama’s executive order raising the salary of Vice President Joe Biden and other federal officials.

Adolf Hitler Progressive pioneer: Part One

The microscopic beam - created by scientists from Scotland and the Czech Republic - allows a source of light to attract objects.
