Spain ceded control of Gibraltar to what is now the United Kingdom in 1713 in the Treaty of Utrecht. The minute territory of 2.6 square miles nicknamed the “Rock” is a peninsula off Spain on the Mediterranean coast just off the entrance to the Atlantic Ocean and it gives Britain access to the Mediterranean.

Pentagon honors last American veteran of WWI

Now this is a good story!

World War I veterans still have no national memorial. There has been no Hollywood blockbuster in recent years to bring their story to life. But they still have Frank Buckles.

More than 90 years after he fudged his age to join the Army, Corporal Frank Woodruff Buckles, the last surviving American veteran of World War I, came to the Pentagon yesterday to represent the more than two million "doughboys" who braved the trench warfare and gas attacks of the "The Great War."

"It is an honor to be here to represent the veterans of World War I. I thank you," the 107-year-old Buckles, of Charles Town, W.Va., told a packed auditorium. Buckles spoke softly but clearly, and shared stories - including a meeting with General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing.

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates unveiled portraits of Buckles and eight other veterans who were photographed over the past 18 months - but seven have since died, and the eighth served with Canadian forces.

At 16, Buckles sailed from Hoboken, N.J., in December 1917 on the HMS Carpathia, the ship that saved Titanic survivors five years earlier. He drove an ambulance in England and France and later guarded German prisoners.

After his service - for which he was paid $143.90, including a $60 bonus - he worked in shipping and became a cattle farmer in 1954. He still oversees the farm.

Now, Buckles is the last flesh-and-blood reminder of the 116,000 Americans who gave their lives to save Europe at the start of the 20th century.

We are losing one of our greatest generations and it saddens me deeply, learn from your elders whenever possible and always treat them with respect.

The Surge is Working in Iraq

Just some good news...

From The Washington Times:

No one is declaring victory, but cautious optimists on the U.S.-led war in Iraq suddenly find themselves armed with a growing number of indicators that the fighting has taken a new, more hopeful turn.

U.S. military fatalities are down sharply, from 101 in June to 39 in October. Iraqi civilian deaths also were down sharply, from 1,791 in August to 750 in October, according to the Associated Press. Mortar rocket attacks by insurgents in October were the lowest since February 2006, as were the number of "indirect fire" attacks on coalition forces.

Iraqi officials say they plan to reduce checkpoints, ease curfews and reopen some roads in and around Baghdad because of the improving security situation. Sunni Arab tribal leaders in western Anbar province, now allied with the U.S. military, say al Qaeda is "almost defeated" in their once-chaotic region.

I just thought it was important to report the good news in Iraq the Lame Stream Media will not report without spin.

For years, Senators John McCain and John Kyl, Congressmen Kolbe and Flake failed Arizona voters. With illegal aliens flooding across Arizona’s borders by the hundreds of thousands, these men stood in the halls of Congress—pretending to serve their constituents—but did nothing. They’re still doing nothing.

Today, because of their inaction, Arizona citizens suffer 57,000 stolen cars in the Phoenix area annually. Illegals live 20 to a house with five cars parked in front yards. Drug routes mainline through Phoenix. Hospitals suffer tens of thousands of anchor babies underwritten by taxpayers. People-smuggling ‘safe houses’ dot middle-income neighborhoods! Schools tolerate illegal alien kids that can’t speak, write or read English. Every Arizona citizen annually pays $1,000.00 in extra taxes for illegal alien children while their own kids can’t receive a decent education. Violence escalates in “new” Mexican barrios that make parts of Phoenix look like Tijuana. Drug smugglers gunned down National Park Ranger Chris Eggle on the Arizona border. Thousands of tons of trash and human waste litter the once pristine Arizona desert. Arizona citizens suffer auto accidents by hundreds of drunk-driving illegal aliens on a weekly basis.

It works like this………
If your elected officials aren’t doing their jobs, get ‘em out of there and elect sombody who will.
Since 1948 the average % of eligible voters in America that actually voted is around 55%. The high in 1960 was 65%…The low was 1994 at 53%.

• The good news is the percentage has remained pretty steady.


• The bad news is the people we’re putting in office aren’t doing their job.


• The good news is we do their job review.


• The bad news is they can lie to us and tell us how hard they are working.


• The good news is we can fire them when they do.
  

SO……..
Quit your whining. There ARE important reasons to vote…..THIS IS ONE OF THEM.

Turkey, Pakistan public oppose bigger Islam role

Into a dreary world, a bit of light enters...

Turkey and Pakistan, two influential Muslim states, have seen massive public demonstrations in recent days in which huge crowds protested that Islam was playing too big a role in public affairs.

In Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, an estimated 100,000 people took to the streets Sunday to protest plans by an influential mosque to run a "Taliban-style" anti-vice campaign in the capital city of Islamabad.

A day earlier, some 500,000 Turks staged a rally in Ankara urging Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a former Islamist and head of the moderate Muslim ruling party, not to run for president, traditionally a secular and nonpartisan post.

Finally, some good news in the Middle East! I did not expect this, but I am sure happy it is happening! Hope springs eternal folks and this adds more to the water table.

Court backs ban on partial birth abortion

The AP reports that the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) says partial birth abortion ban is not unconstitutional. It is about time their rulings made some sense.

The 5-4 ruling said the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act that Congress passed and
President Bush signed into law in 2003 does not violate a woman's constitutional right to an abortion.

That is because abortion is not covered by the Constitution. Nowhere in the Constitution does it grant the right of a woman to kill her unborn child, nor does it ban it. Roe v. Wade was bad law. SCOTUS legislated from the bench that day and started that whole nonsense rolling in the courts. Decisions like abortion should be decided by the legislative branch, not the judicial branch.

This is a horrible procedure of delivering all but the head of a fully formed baby and sucking its brains out. You want to talk about being barbaric and uncivilized, this takes the cake.

We need one more conservative judge on the bench to take back our country from judicial tyranny. Unfortunately, it does not look like we are going to get one. Kennedy just replaced O'Connor as the new swing voter and is why we still get bad 5-4 decisions. But, we have to hope or what is left...

Folding at Home!

What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease? Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.

Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

You can help by simply running a piece of software. Folding@Home is a distributed computing project -- people from through out the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer makes the project closer to our goals.

Folding@Home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems thousands to millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.

What have we done so far? We have had several successes. You can read about them on our Science page, Results section, or go directly to our press and papers page.

Even more impressive is the inclusion of the new PS3 gaming console!

Now in 2006, we are looking forward to another major advance in capabilities. This advance utilizes the new Cell processor in Sony’s PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) to achieve performance previously only possible on supercomputers. With this new technology (as well as new advances with GPUs), we will likely be able to attain performance on the 25 gigaflop scale per computer. With about 40,000 such machines, we would be able to achieve performance on the petaflop scale. With software from Sony, the PlayStation 3 will now be able to contribute to the Folding@Home project, pushing Folding@Home a major step forward.

Our goal is to apply this new technology to push Folding@Home into a new level of capabilities, applying our simulations to further study of protein folding and related diseases, including Alzheimer’s Disease, Huntington's Disease, and certain forms of cancer. With these computational advances, coupled with new simulation methodologies to harness the new techniques, we will be able to address questions previously considered impossible to tackle computationally, and make even greater impacts on our knowledge of folding and folding related diseases.

ADVANCED FEATURES FOR THE PS3

The PS3 client will also support some advanced visualization features. While the Cell microprocessor does most of the calculation processing of the simulation, the graphic chip of the PLAYSTATION 3 system (the RSX) displays the actual folding process in real-time using new technologies such as HDR and ISO surface rendering. It is possible to navigate the 3D space of the molecule using the interactive controller of the PS3, allowing us to look at the protein from different angles in real-time. Soldier performs life-saving actions despite life-threatening wounds

Sept. 18, 2006, was a typical morning for platoon medic Cpl. Warrick: The sun was bright, and U.S. military police and Iraqi policemen were conducting their usual transitional training at the Al Huria police station in Iraq. Suddenly, without warning, small-arms fire erupted from all directions. The base was under siege. Coalition forces concentrated fire on the attackers, but then a speeding pick-up truck crashed through the entrance and careened toward the center of the station. The truck detonated its 200-pound aircraft bomb, throwing Cpl. Warrick several meters and knocking him unconscious. Rubble from the explosion buried him. Warrick’s platoon leader saw what happened and quickly pulled him from the debris.

Warrick’s legs were on fire – so the platoon leader used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames. When Warrick regained consciousness, he realized that he was badly burned – but he also realized that if he sat in one place, he would go into shock. He requested morphine, but his medic bag was buried in the burning building. As a medic, he knew that without pain medication, his only choice to avoid slipping into shock was to stay active. So he climbed through a hole in the building to see how he could assist. With a heavy stream of fire still reigning down on the station, and suffering from third-degree burns over 45 percent of his body as well as shrapnel wounds and smoke-inhalation injuries, Warrick went about the work of a medic: He assessed injured soldiers and Iraqi policemen – and told the nearby support battalion what injuries they could expect. That vital information helped save the lives of seven Iraqi policemen.

Warrick realized he couldn’t fight off the shock much longer, so he moved to the north side of the station where he could be evacuated to the medical station himself. For his life-saving actions while suffering from life-threatening wounds, Warrick was awarded the Silver Star on Dec. 11, 2006.

U.S. destroys bomb factory in Iraq

U.S. troops killed five insurgents and destroyed a bomb-making factory Wednesday north of Baghdad, and dozens more were detained after fierce clashes in a Sunni-dominated province west of the capital.

Scattered violence killed at least nine people, while a claim by the U.S. military that insurgents used children in a weekend suicide attack raised concerns about new tactics being adopted by insurgents as a security crackdown aimed at stopping sectarian violence enters its sixth week.

Iraq's Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, meanwhile, renewed calls for talks to be opened with insurgents in an attempt to bring peace, but he excluded al-Qaida in Iraq.

"I do believe that there is no way but to talk to everybody," he told the British Broadcasting Corp.

Apart from al-Qaida, which he said was "not very much willing in fact to talk to anybody," all parties "should be invited, should be called to sit down around the table to discuss their fears, their reservations."

Maj. Gen. Michael Barbero, deputy director for regional operations on the Joint Staff, said Tuesday that a vehicle used in the attack was waved through a U.S. military checkpoint because two children were visible in the back seat. He said this was the first reported use of children in a suicide car bombing in Baghdad.

"Children in the back seat lowered suspicion, (so) we let it move through, they parked the vehicle, the adults run out and detonate it with the children in the back," Barbero told reporters in Washington. "The brutality and ruthless nature of this enemy hasn't changed."

I should say cowards! Blowing it up with children in the vehicle as they ran away?

U.S. forces killed five suspected insurgents, detained three others and used an airstrike to destroy a bomb-making factory that contained large-caliber ammunition and several 50-gallon barrels of explosive material near Taji, an air base 12 miles north of Baghdad, the military said in a statement. No American troops or civilians were injured during the operation, it added.

A Sadrist lawmaker, Bahaa al-Araji, also said U.S. troops raided his office Wednesday, seizing the memory card from his computer along with a gun and a rifle. The U.S. military had no immediate comment.

We are making progress, but I know Sad'r told his militia to pull back and hide their arms until this is over. He is probably watching Congress and figures we will be leaving so he can just wait; thanks hezbocrats!

Federal Judge Says Sudan is to Blame for Deadly USS Cole Bombing

NORFOLK, Va. — A federal judge said Wednesday that Sudan is responsible for the bombing of the USS Cole but he needs more time to determine damages for the families of the 17 sailors killed when terrorists bombed the ship in 2000.

"There is substantial evidence in this case presented by the expert testimony that the government of Sudan induced the particular bombing of the Cole by virtue of prior actions of the government of Sudan," U.S. District Judge Robert G. Doumar said.

The civil trial started Tuesday in which the victims' relatives tried to prove the terrorist attack couldn't have happened without Sudan's support.

Episcopal minister halts all weddings

How can ministers ignore the teachings of the bible?

An Episcopal minister will stop performing all wedding ceremonies to protest the denomination's prohibition of same-sex unions.

"We are called to join the fast that our homosexual brothers and sisters in Christ have had to observe all their lives," said the Rev. Robert Hirschfeld, rector of Grace Episcopal Church.

Several members of the congregation say they support Hirschfeld's move, which he announced in his Sunday sermon. Others said they were concerned the move might add to the polarization of an issue that has divided Episcopals.

Erica Winter of Northampton said working for social justice often involves giving up something.

"I'm so proud to be a part of this," Nina Scott, a congregant from Amherst, said. "It's a step that needs to be taken."

Two priest associates at Grace Church, the Rev. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas and the Rev. Burton Whiteside, also said they would not perform marriages.

Why is it some people think they can pick and chose what they want to believe in any given religion? Look folks, if you disagree with the teachings of a religion, you don't get to re-write said religion; go to one you agree with, or none at all. Who are you to re-write a religion? If you think you are all that, go create your own religion.

This corruption of traditional moral values has got to end, before we fall like Rome.

Deficit drops in first part of fiscal year

Just some good news...

From USA Today:

The federal deficit for the first five months of the fiscal year that began Oct. 1 is 25.5% less than it was a year ago as tax collections continue to outpace growth in spending, the Treasury Department reported Monday. The $162.2 billion deficit is due in part to larger-than-expected surpluses in December and January. The Bush administration expects the deficit for this year will total $244 billion. The Congressional Budget Office forecasts the deficit to be $214 billion. It was $248.2 billion last year, the smallest in four years.

Yup, thos dumb Bush tax cuts need to go away. hehe
