Local jurisdictions across the country, beginning in Hazleton, Pa., have decided they need to act to control crimes committed by illegal aliens in their towns. A variety of laws against illegals as tenants, against illegals as company employees, and in favor of English as the required language, have resulted.
The dimensions of the problem are clear. A recent Justice Department audit (reported in The Washington Times Jan. 9) revealed more than 70 percent of illegal aliens arrested in the U.S. had previously been arrested for five or more crimes. The crime problem is compounded when you add the financial costs of additional medical care, additional education and additional police and prisons, due to illegal aliens.
Web site initiated for Relief Act trial
Anyone who wants to witness firsthand the trial that will determine the fate of Hazleton’s Illegal Immigration Relief Act better arrive in Scranton early on Monday.
U.S. District Court Judge James Munley is expecting a large turnout and even set up a Web page listing rules for those who wish to attend the proceedings, which are expected to be covered by the national media.
Folks who can’t attend the trial can visit the Web site for updates on witness lists and select docket filings such as pleadings, orders and rulings as provided by Munley.
Protests set ahead of Hazleton illegal immigration court case
With opening arguments in the Hazleton illegal immigration case beginning Monday at the Scranton federal courthouse, opponents of the ordinance have organized two events to protest the city’s policies.
The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF), one of the advocacy groups representing the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, will host a town hall style meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Crystal Barbeque restaurant, 44 E. Broad St. in Hazleton, according to a press release.
The federal court case involving Hazleton’s Illegal Immigration Relief Act opens Monday in U.S. District Court in Scranton. The case, formally known as Lozano et al. v. City of Hazleton, will get under way at 9 a.m. The court expects the trial to last about two weeks.
Mayor Lou Barletta expects to be called to the witness stand the day the trial opens.
Witness lists for both sides have not yet been released. But Barletta has been told that he will be called to testify very early in the trial by the plaintiffs, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund and a handful of private legal firms and individuals.
Pennsylvania trial is first test of local immigration law
A Pennsylvania town’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration will be challenged by civil rights campaigners in a landmark federal trial beginning on Monday that could signal whether such local laws across the country can stand up to legal challenge.
Hazleton, a community of about 30,000, set the tone for dozens of other towns across the United States when it passed a law last year imposing penalties on businesses that hire undocumented aliens, and fining landlords who rent to them. The city council also declared English the official language.

Illegal Aliens - just doin’ the job Americans won’t
In Madison, Tennessee police busted a Mexican brothel and suspect there are at least 10 more of them in the Nashville area. Supposedly the prostitutes were being held against their will and were in their 30’s but at that age it seems a bit of a stretch to call it human trafficking.
