Record number of coal fired generators to be shut down
Facing declining demand for electricity and stiff federal environmental regulations, coal plant operators are planning to retire 175 coal-fired generators, or 8.5 percent of the total coal-fired capacity in the United States,according to an analysis by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Fewer Americans had jobs in July
There were 195,000 fewer people employed in the United States in July than in June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as the national unemployment rate ticked up from 8.2 percent to 8.3 percent.

Daylight Savings Time: Rationale And Original Idea

First a brief definition:

The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time (called "Summer Time" in many places in the world) is to make better use of daylight. We change our clocks during the summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening.

Then some reason why we do it;

According to some sources, DST saves energy. Studies done by the U.S. Department of Transportation in 1975 showed that Daylight Saving Time trims the entire country's electricity usage by a small but significant amount, about one percent each day, because less electricity is used for lighting and appliances. Similarly, in New Zealand, power companies have found that power usage decreases 3.5 percent when daylight saving starts. In the first week, peak evening consumption commonly drops around five percent.

The rationale behind the 1975 study of DST-related energy savings was that energy use and the demand for electricity for lighting homes is directly related to the times when people go to bed at night and rise in the morning. In the average home, 25 percent of electricity was used for lighting and small appliances, such as TVs and stereos. A good percentage of energy consumed by lighting and appliances occurred in the evening when families were home. By moving the clock ahead one hour, the amount of electricity consumed each day decreased.

And finally the Original Idea:

The idea of daylight saving was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin during his sojourn as an American delegate in Paris in 1784, in an essay, "An Economical Project."

Frankly, I think we should just let Mother Nature do what she does when she wants and stop messing with this. There is going to be more sunlight in the summer and less in the winter "naturally". You should follow the link and read the whole story. It's a good one.

Tourists Flee French Caribbean as Protests Grow More Violent

Well it's official we are going the way of France;

BASSE-TERRE, Guadeloupe — Tourists stuck at hotels as violent protests swept this Caribbean island began flying out on Thursday after police pulled down barricades on roads leading to the airport following a third night of rioting.

What are they protesting, you ask?

Strikers in Guadeloupe and nearby Martinique are demanding a euro200 ($250) monthly raise for low-paid workers who now make roughly euro900 ($1,130) a month.

French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said Thursday a "a very significant pay raise, in particular for the lower earners," is now on the table in negotiations between employers and striking workers and President Nicolas Sarkozy later the increase might be exempted from taxes.

Sarkozy called the situation on the islands a "crisis," saying it had its "roots in the fact that for years, France's overseas populations were not told the truth because it was thought we could fix everything through a benevolent paternalism."

Sarkozy seemed to imply that his predecessors preferred to give handouts to overseas regions instead of confronting fundamental flaws in the island economies.

Ah Socialism at its finest. Are you all ready for the future of the USA after the Dems are through with it? Huh are you, are you?

United Nations' threat: No more parental rights

A United Nations human rights treaty that could prohibit children from being spanked or homeschooled, ban youngsters from facing the death penalty and forbid parents from deciding their families' religion is on America's doorstep, a legal expert warns.

Michael Farris of Purcellville, Va., is president of ParentalRights.org, chairman of the Home School Legal Defense Association and chancellor of Patrick Henry College. He told WND that under the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, or CRC, every decision a parent makes can be reviewed by the government to determine whether it is in the child's best interest.

"It's definitely on our doorstep," he said. "The left wants to make the Obama-Clinton era permanent. Treaties are a way to make it as permanent as stuff gets. It is very difficult to extract yourself from a treaty once you begin it. If they can put all of their left-wing socialist policies into treaty form, we're stuck with it even if they lose the next election."

The 1990s-era document was ratified quickly by 193 nations worldwide, but not the United States or Somalia. In Somalia, there was then no recognized government to do the formal recognition, and in the United States there's been opposition to its power. Countries that ratify the treaty are bound to it by international law.

Although signed by Madeleine Albright, U.S. ambassador to the U.N., on Feb. 16, 1995, the U.S. Senate never ratified the treaty, largely because of conservatives' efforts to point out it would create that list of rights which primarily would be enforced against parents.

We as US citizens are yet again under attack by the rest of the world. First they want to take our children from us, then our guns, then our property. Does “International Peace Parks” ring a bell. There are three of them in the US right now that I know of. You people voted for the Dems, and we are doomed. There is no one in this administration that will care about standing up to the United Nations. NO ONE.

Ukraine siphons Russian gas shipment

Ukraine has siphoned some of Russia's natural gas shipments to the Balkans, the Russian gas monopoly Gazprom said late Friday – a day after it cut supplies to Ukraine in a contract dispute.

But Ukraine's Naftogaz company said it was only using some of the gas Russia pumps through the country to keep its pipeline system operating, and that it should not be blamed for the supply reductions to the Balkans. Naftogaz said it was Gazprom's duty to ship this so-called "technical" gas.

Naftogaz uses the same pipeline system to serve both domestic and transit gas customers.

Gazprom Deputy Chairman Alexander Medvedev urged Ukraine to comply with agreements to maintain shipments, saying Balkan countries were "suffering" from a reduction in supplies.

Romania marked a 30-40 percent drop in Russian supplies Friday evening, the country's Transgaz transport company said, according to Realitatea TV.

Poland saw a 6 percent decrease in the gas flow from Ukraine, according to the Polish gas monopoly PGNiG and pipeline operator OGP Gaz-System.

Customers in both Poland and Romania have not been affected, however. Transgaz' managing director Ioan Rusu told Realitatea TV that Romania had two days worth of supplies to meet customer needs. And the Polish gas interests said the country was making up the 6 percent deficit with supplies from another receiving point on the border with Belarus.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials were visiting European capitals Friday to argue their case in the dispute with Russia. They also were reassuring neighbors that Kiev would not interrupt gas supplies, according to Bohdan Sokolovsky, energy adviser to Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko.

I tend to side with the Ukraine against Russia because of their consitent use of Their gas pipeline to intimidate Europe, but we will have to wait and see.

Second Herd Tests Positive for Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Britain

Tests confirmed a second outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease southwest of London, Britain's environment secretary said Tuesday, raising fears the highly contagious virus could spread to herds across southern England.

A second batch of cows, tested late Monday, were within the initial 2-mile-radius protection zone set up Friday around the farm where a first group of infected cattle was found, Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said.

The outbreak, 30 milessouthwest of London, occurred just 4 miles from a laboratory that produces vaccines containing the same rarely seen strain of foot-and-mouth disease, officials said.

Benn was expecting an initial report Tuesday following checks to see whether there have been breaches in security or safety at the laboratory, which is the focus of investigations into the outbreak.

News of a second confirmed outbreak fed fears of a repeat of scenes in 2001, when 7 million animals were culled and incinerated on pyres, devastating agriculture and rural tourism in Britain.[snip]

The vaccine laboratory is shared by the government's Institute for Animal Health, or IAH, and a private pharmaceutical company, Merial Animal Health, the British arm of Duluth, Georgia-based Merial Ltd.

Merial said it found no evidence of a breach in biosecurity, and the IAH claimed a check of records found "limited use" of the virus in the past four weeks.

Foot-and-mouth disease affects cloven-hoofed animals, including cows, sheep, pigs and goats, but does not typically affect humans.

The prime minister, who broke off a vacation to handle a response to the outbreak, said investigators were trying to pinpoint the cause of the outbreak — but acknowledged that the disease strain found in the first infected herd was the same used at the research laboratory.

National Farmers' Union president Peter Kendall said the latest case was "not entirely unexpected," given the nature of the disease.

The first herd of around 120 cows from a farm in Normandy, outside Guildford, was slaughtered Saturday after the virus was identified and confirmed in two animals, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said.

A farmer first noticed signs of illness in his cows on July 29 and notified authorities on Thursday, according to a government report filed to the World Organization for Animal Health.

Britain has banned the export of livestock, meat and milk — a decision endorsed by the European Commission. The commission also backed London's decision to halt the movement of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs nationwide to prevent the spread of the virus.

Imports of British pigs and pork products have been banned by the United States, Japan, Russia and South Korea in response to the outbreak. The United States and Japan already have bans in place on British beef imports.

I hope this is a small contained outbreak, it broke my heart to hear about all those animals being destroyed last time.
