Sukkot
The
Festival of Sukkot begins on Tishri 15, the fifth day after Yom
Kippur. It is quite a drastic transition, from one of the most solemn
holidays in our year to one of the most joyous. Sukkot is so
unreservedly joyful that it is commonly referred to in Jewish prayer
and literature as Z'man Simchateinu Z'mn Simchateinu (in Hebrew),
the Season of our Rejoicing.

Du Bois
W.E.B.
Du Bois was born during the term of President Andrew Johnson and died
the year that Lyndon Johnson became president. Du Bois was born in
1868 and raised in Massachusetts, and graduated in 1888 from Fisk
University, a black liberal arts college in Nashville, Tennessee.
During the summer, he taught in a rural school and later wrote about
his experiences in his book THE SOULS OF BLACK FOLK.

Gov't paying to help shield Illegal Immigrants in the US from
deportation
The
government of Mexico is paying to help its citizens who are living
illegally in the United States avoid deportation. According to a
report from National Public Radio, the Mexican government through its
50 consulates around the United States has been helping to fund
low-income illegal immigrants to apply for President Obama’s
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA — which
shields illegal immigrants from deportation and allows them to work

Supreme
Court blocks Wisconsin voter ID law
The
Supreme Court on Thursday night blocked Wisconsin from implementing
its new voter identification law on the eve of next month's
elections. In a related action, a district court judge in Texas ruled
that state's voter ID law is racially discriminatory and violates the
Voting Rights Act. The state attorney general's office said it would
appeal.

Perkins, Family Research Council president and outspoken opponent of
gay marriage, said Sunday that the Supreme Court effectively deciding
last week to allow states to handle the issue is a “back alley
maneuver” and that the debate is “not going away.”
